Travel Toiletry Organization

Happy Thursday!  We have almost made it to the weekend.  Ever have those areas that you say you’re going to straighten up but then never get around to it?  Yeah, me too.  Actually, I have several of those areas!  Most resulting from our big move last year.  I was thinking earlier this week, it’s been a year that we went under contract for our house!  A YEAR!  Time, please slow down!

For years, I have kept travel size toiletries stored in two boot size clear containers and for years, I have not liked the arrangement.  I kept the containers up on the top shelf of my closet and either had to have Adam hand me the containers every time we packed for a trip or would have to go get a step stool and balance getting down/up with the heavy containers.  Not ideal and wasn’t working for me.

Here said containers are…I also always planned to label these but you can see, I never got around to that either.

It looks like a hot mess but I really did have some order to the containers – one held mostly travel shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and lotion and the other was everything else travel toiletry related.  Anyone else a fan of the free Bath & Body Work travel item offers??

I have this tall storage tower in our master bathroom and it’s one of my favorite things EVER.  It holds so much and is easily accessible.  I was storing extra curling irons, hair ribbon and clips in the large bottom drawer.  Ask me how many times I used any of those items since we moved in in March.  That’s right – zero.  Zero compared to probably 20 times I reached for the travel toiletry containers – something had to change!

I pulled out the two baskets that were storing the hair items and stuck them in the place where the travel item containers were in my closet.  That left me with an empty drawer just waiting to be organized.

I didn’t want to buy anything for this project so I headed up to my extra container storage area in the attic.  I grabbed a variety of bins to see what configuration would work best. Side note – those hot pink baskets?  Yeah, those have been with me since freshman year of college!  I’d say I have gotten my money’s worth.

I played around with different arrangements and this is what I ended up with.

And, viola!  Here’s the end result.  Here’s how I grouped things:

Starting from the top left corner:

  • Travel power adapters
  • Empty clear containers for liquids, Febreeze and wrinkle leaser taller spray bottles
  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Luggage tags and a set of travel bubble baths

Middle row:

  • Hair products for styling
  • Razors and shaving cream
  • Nail files, contact solution, Q-tips
  • Tissues and make up removers

Front row:

  • Lotions and gels I need to use up & body sprays
  • Shampoo and conditioner and I added in the sample packs that come in magazines, etc.
  • Shower gel and lotion

I can easily see what I have and packing these items for a trip will be a breeze.  This is one of those things where it took me maybe 20 minutes to fix something that has bugged me for years.  This has jump started me to tackle other little projects that have been nagging me but I haven’t taken the time to deal with.  Stay tuned for my 10-minute chifforobe tune up, hall closet reboot and pantry overhaul posts.
